Wish you had posted the entire make/model of your Dell laptop.

To use the Alt codes you must have the Number Keypad on. On a PC, just press the NumLock key and light should come on and you can use the Alt codes. For laptops, You have to use the Fn + Alt keys together and the number keypad is the numbers on certain dedicated letters keys. Check your Help for your laptop to show which key engages and locks the Fn (Number Pad) on or see: How to Use the Numeric Keypad on Your Laptop - http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-use-the-numeric-keypad-on-your-laptop.navId-323008.html

Some symbols may not show because your computer does not contain the font set and/or your browser is not set to the correct Character Encoding. Changing browser's encoding is usually done from its View Menu.

If you look at your keyboard, you should see that some of the keys have numbers below the letter.

Look at UIO, JKL and M. See numbers?

Those keys become the number pad if you hit FN-NumLk. Once NumLK is on, you do alt codes like you would on any computer: hold down ALT, key the number, release Alt

So:

Fn-NmLk - Turn on Num Lock

Alt - Start entering

J - The 1 key

L - The 3 key.

Release Alt

Result should be ♪

Don't forget to hit FN-NmLk again, or y64 w533 start gett5ng n40bers 5n everyth5ng y64 ty*e.

Laptops that don't have a separate number pad to the right of the Enter key have one integrated into the letter keys. Look carefully at your keyboard, and you'll see numbers printed on some of the keys. When Num Lock is engaged, these keys produce numbers instead of letters.

Once you turn on Num Lock, you can use ALT plus the ASCII code to enter the symbols on the number keys. You can get musical notes by using ALT+013 and ALT+014. Note that these don't work in all programs, since these values have other meanings as well.

you should have a key on your keyboard called num lock. press it and the letters on your keyboard become numbers. They should be labeled with small numbers but if they are not: J=1 K=2 L=3 U=4 I=5 O=6 &=8 (=9 )=0 On a laptop the same function is performed using the function key Fn pressed at the same time as the previous keys. Check your owners manual for confirmation.

Never gave too much thought about that
