How to build a website?

I'm wondering how to build a website. Where do you even begin? If I want to build a website as huge as Ebay or youtube, where do you start? I'm NOT looking to build a small personal site, I'm talking about something huge where users can upload information and there is all kinds of downloading and purchasing taking place. I have a great idea, but NO CLUE where to even begin. Any type of information would be greatly appreciated! For example do you buy space from a "hosting company (whatever that is?), and do they own your website if you buy space from them? Honostly...I have no clue about all this. Please help!

This is an interesting question. First off, it would be next to impossible for whatever you're planning to be as big as Ebay or youtube (unless you have a really amazing idea), but for now let's say it was. Here are some things that you would need:

1. Buy server space from a hosting company. They don't own your site, they just put it on their computer so you don't have to buy a server. I suggest, however, that if your site becomes as big as you say it will, to actually buy server hardware etc. and host it yourself. Note that I do not recommend this unless your site gets that big. Servers are a huge investment, and maintaining servers eat up all your time and money, so it has to be worth it first.

2. Buy a website name from a DNS server hosting company. This makes it possible for someone to go to your website when they type the correct URL (ex: youtube.com)

3. Learn HTML. Basic language of web pages.

4. Learn PHP/MySQL or similar. This will let you host a database, which will make it possible to upload stuff. PHP is also good for scripting anything else you may need, as are Java, Perl, Python, and Ruby. You can do everything else with those, like streaming, buying, etc.

But obviously these are just tools. This is to guide you, and help you begin. Want to hear my suggestion? Here it is: If this idea is as amazing as you say, you can probably contract with an established freelancer that already knows how to do that stuff, so you won't have to worry about it.

The type of website you want will require a lot of expertise and if you were to pay someone, he will charge you not less than $1000.

The simplest way to achieve what you are looking for is by looking for and already existing template. You have two options.

1. Buy web hosting space from a host that will support all the features you are looking for. The host that i think will give all those features is strarlogic. See the link below.

2. Get a site builder that has all the features. Xsite builder will help you design a classic website with the features you explained above.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

If you want a great ressource to learn web design, I stongly recommend the following book - best $27 I have ever spent!
