I am attempting to get into developing apps for iphones and have read that Xcode is one of the best things to have! After many failed attempts to download and install this program I have decided to ask the wonderful geeks of yahoo! Please, geeks, help a sister out! I have a Mac 10.5.8 and have just downloaded Xcode 3.1.1. However, upon trying to install this program I've encountered a problem! It won't let me actually install it because it's saying that there is no default application for it and I need to choose one. I've tried to choose any of the options it gave me but it still won't work. Help!

Alex, to develop for iOS, you will need a minimum of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) and Xcode 3.2.6 or higher (Xcode 4).

You download Xcode as a "dmg" which you mount and open the package installer in Finder. After a succesfull installation, you type this in the terminal:

gcc --version

You should see something like this:

i686-apple-darwin10-llvm-gcc-4.2 (GCC) 4.2.1

It might be a bit slower but there is no harm in trying, you can always uninstall it if you need to.
