Haha. Why the hell did you get ubuntu? Man up and get debian or fedora.

Even Mint and Crunchbang would do. Why the HELL ubuntu? Ask yourself that before you reformat.

It sounds like there might be some additional statement in either the .bashrc file or .bash_profile file that is having it exit back out of the session. You should try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F#, where F# represents usually a number 1-6 (using the F keys) for a virtual console or TTY. Enter your user name and password there. If it does the same login, logout loop that you have seen, then you can go in as root and modify your .bashrc or .bash_profile to remove the erroneous command causing the login/logout issue by temporarily moving .bashrc and .bash_profile to .bashrc.old and .bash_profile.old. This usually causes new ones to be built, but if not you can edit after you are able to login to the GUI.

PS, Ubuntu is not for advanced users. That would be more like Debian,Gentoo, Slackware, Sabayon, Arch. Ubuntu is designed around usability even though I don't use it anymore (migrated to Debian and Gentoo based systems.)

Ubuntu is for advanced users. I've used Linux for about 4 years and I can't get on with Ubuntu, what chance do you stand?

Get Linux Mint instead, that's much easier.
