I kind of depends on the shop - in smaller ones, the DBA is also a developer who will be creating procedures and execution scripts. In the larger ones (like where your friend probably works), the majority of the DBA's time is spent in maintaining user profiles, monitoring log files, processing backups and recoveries, making sure the databases are replicated and distributes as needed and so forth. Generally, in such shops, the main time a DBA is writing scripts is to adjust existing ones to accommodate changes or creating new ones to add new elements of the overall system design.

Well, that one day a week where you DO have to write code, you darn well better know what you are doing. I don't want the new guy who doesn't really know sql but calls himself a DBA anyway touching my database.

We have a DBA on our team. He probably hasn't written much SQL the last couple weeks. He's been doing the planing for a significant server upgrade and working on a more robust failover strategy.

But at other times, when we are adding a significant new feature set to the product that requires some schema changes and additional stored procs and views, then he will spend much more of his time writing SQL.

But we (I am not a DBA), write most of the more mundane SQL code. I do occasionally need a bit of help getting a more complex query working right, or if it is already working right, getting it to work faster. So I ask the DBA for a bit of help. I expect him to know SQL better than I do, and know the ins and outs and be able to spot something in my query than may be less than optimal.

You don't wanna be the new guy who doesn't really know SQL if I turn to you for a bit of help.

database administrator (DBA) is a person responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of physical databases.

The role includes the development and design of database strategies, monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, and planning for future expansion requirements. They may also plan, co-ordinate and implement security measures to safeguard the database.

Everyone can take the oracle DBA certificate but it does not mean he or she will be database administrator.

IMO in spite of is "more desirable reachable" might want to matter upon the guy. in view that i have in basic words used Microsoft progression products sq. Server might want to be more desirable reachable for me. in case you've saved up with the recent in sq. Server you may want to get some reliable money, in spite of the indisputable fact that, i have regularly considered Oracle jobs pay a lot more desirable. If I knew Oracle i might want to honestly have it on the resume for larger bucks.
