You don't need to know a lot about programming to get a job as an animator. You do need to know a lot about design and animation. Try to get your hands on Autodesk products because they use Renderman Ray Tracing technology which is the industry standard. Blender is good too but it isn't necessarily going to get you a job.
Programming knowledge is primarily necessary to become a video game programmer. Animators work with programmers and use their work. That is different.

You need a complete knowledge of programming. (That has nothing to do with knowing any particular language.) You also need a few years of experience actually writing programs. Depending on the game you may also need experience in sprites.

you don't need to know a lot about "Programming" , but more about "Video Editing".
You may want to practice making Flash animations, it's all the same idea (with keyframes, etc)

If you mean animator as in actually creating the games, I would say a lot. The best language to learn game software is Java. Java is more high level than languages such as C and C++. Also you can download free tools to code Java in i.e NetBeans IDE.
Good news is there are some good books out there to help you achieve game programming. If you want to start with the basics, a book called "Java: A Beginner's Guide" by Herbert Schildt is a great place to start. Or if you want to dive straight into game programming a book called "Developing Games In Java: by David Breckeen is a very good book.
If you cant be asked with books or haven't got a lot of money I'd suggest you start with learning the syntax of Java and going onto learning IF statements, For and while loops, Arrays, Functions, parameters and Object handling. Then after get into Threads, Semaphores and Graphics. (This is still no where the knowledge you would need)
Good luck, you won't be able to achieve this overnight.

I am at a vocational school learning about programing. There is a lot that you need to know. I am not sure if you have heard of a program called Alice but it is basic programing. There is a lot involved. I can give you a place to go online and check out. It is university in Florida. It is called Full Sail University. They are mainly for media game design and much more.
