Oh, we've heard of it. But it's one of those awful traumatic memories that we do our best not to think about. Guys who like Asp.net won't shut up about it. They dismiss every other useful web technology as "stupid" or "disorganized" or "totally inelegant."

But you know what? I've worked with three kinds of Asp.net over the decade or so that it's been out, and it's hell. C# especially is the most brutally disorganized, incoherent, poorly thought out programming language I've ever been exposed to.

Guys who do it talk a lot of smack about Php and how ugly it can be, but Php at it's worst doesn't compare to the level of spaghetti code you see as a matter of standard operation that you do with C#, and I would challenge anybody to prove me wrong on that.

Working in Windows world is pure hell.

That's why so many companies refuse to use it these days.

Studies are showing again and again that unless you need to use some very specific enterprise app, that Linux is significantly cheaper, and easier for hackers to use and understand.

Hope that helps!

I don't think it's one of the most known languages, but it is in quite a lot of websites. Although, it may not be very known, I don't think it's dead, because Microsoft probably wouldn't be wasting resources to keep creating their Visual Web Designer (ASP, I think, couldn't really use it) if the language were dead.

Here are some commonly used websites that use asp:

hotmail.com - Microsoft email

asp.net - Wonder what that is

microsoft.com - and all their subdomains (e.g. msdn, msn, etc.)

Well, those are the ones I had enough effort to find, but there are plenty more (not just used by microsoft though). Whenever you're browsing around the internet just look up to the address bar and check to see if the url ends with .aspx, and you'll have found another site.

IMO ASP.net is still in it's infancy. It will only gain popularity as time goes on, as it has the most successful tech company in history backing it 100%.

You are completely wrong about many programmers never hearing of ASP.net. I would never hire a programmer that hadn't heard of ASP.net, even if it wouldn't be used. This would show a huge ignorance of programming in general.

I think and believe that its not dead at all. It is really upgrading very fast and the current version 4.0 is a great update. The upcoming 4.5 is the best one because it has many great features. The speed of the upgradation of the framework keeps it alive. I believe its going to rock.

No, but it is mostly used by corporate systems that aren't pinching pennies.
