I have a Mac and sometimes I'm only using two applications but I'm using almost two gigabytes of my RAM. How do I check and stop the background processes that are causing this?

One or both of those apps might have major RAM leakage. Use Activity Monitor to see if they are. Reboot your Mac, it just might be previous apps being saved in the Inactive portion of the RAM. You can choose the app in Activity Monitor and Quit Process > Force Quit. Just don't force quit any system programs.
