Is visual basic express edition 2005 from Microsoft corporation a totally free software ?

I had just download installed it on my pc to learn programming .... after i installed Microsoft tell me to register or else will be stop functioning in 30 days ...I follow instruction and go register .....They sent me a serial number via mail and i had pasted it on my visual basic that had just installed ....Afterthat they sent me email say thank you and some advertisement....So, is that visual basic a free product for us to use ? I din give any credit card number to them but i can use it fully ??? Any professional programmer know wheather visual basic is free ...pls tell me .... Your help will be much appreciated
