You'll have a lot more versatility using FastStone Capture, version 5.3 (free). With just a Ctrl + PrtSc, you will have control over the area captured. Plus, it opens in its own Photo Editor so you can crop/adjust before saving. Also, this programs allows screen captures where you have to scroll window as it will automatically scroll window itself to capture everything.

Take a screen shot. In windows you can use Alt+PrintScreen to capture it. Then open you favorite image editor (MS Paint works fine) and paste it. Now you can save it in your choice of format.

If you have Windows Vista, you can use the snip tool. See the wikihow page for details.
