Question:
recommendations for data size (images, etc.) on a web site?

I am creating a website. I honestly haven't done this since geocities was around (yea...). Anyways I have had a lot of fun learning light javascript and jquery and I want to publish the web site shortly. However I am very concerned about image sizes. I know it is 2012 now and a lot of people are moving into broadband connections, but what is the standard for overall data size of a web page? I have navigation buttons that change on mouseover...I have 4 thumbnail pictures that display larger versions when clicked. These pictures are mostly of high quality and I know it is too much (large pics: 100-150kb; thumbnails are 20-30). Any advice from the pros would be greatly appreciated.

I found a web page size article on the following:-

Website Optimization

WebSiteOptimization.com... some more description follows

Average Web Page Size Septuples Since 2003

Summary: Within the last eight years, the size of the average web page has more than septupled, and the number of external objects has more than tripled. While broadband users have experienced somewhat faster response times, dial-up users have been left behind.

The size of the average web page of the top 1000 websites has more than septupled since 2003.(our last update in July 2009 found it more than quintupled) From 2003 to 2011 the average web page grew from 93.7K to over 679K (see Figure 1), over 7.2 times larger (Domenech et al. 2007, Flinn & Betcher 2008, Charzinsk 2010, Souders 2011). During the same eight-year period, the number of objects in the average web page more than tripled from 25.7 to 85 objects per page. Longer term statistics show that since 1995 the size of the average web page has increased by 48 times, and the number of objects per page has grown by nearly 37 times.

There is lot of info, charts and data compilations shown there... See if that is useful to you. I hope you get your answer.

Best wishes

Usually thumbnails should be around 20 KB max (export your images in JPG format is possible at 75% quality) and larger versions are ok I guess because they are not loaded on first render.

You can use an image optimizer : http://web.bogdanteodoru.com/resources/free-online-image-optimizer-kraken-io/ to make them perfect optimized.

My pages vary widely. Most are less than 50k but a few exceed 500k
