12 years back. What are the chances of finding work if I want to get back into programming? I have worked extensively in CICS/DB2, IMS DB/DC, VSAM using all kinds of utilities and in both Online and Batch environments.

If you can show that you still have the skills, there's actually still a really good market for mainframers. All the old-school mainframers are getting to be retirement age and none of the kids coming out of school want to do it anymore.
If you're looking for a job, I'd look at the banking or credit card industry. They still use mainframes pretty heavily.

i'd agree that Cobol and Java is the superb blend - Java is go-platform and comparable sufficient to C# that gaining know-how of the two is overkill besides. Cobol continues to be drastically used in the mainframe international, plus is taking off to unfold into the pc section as nicely (MicroFocus Cobol, seen Cobol, and so on.) The 2002 implementation of it extra assorted constructive properties including merchandise-orientated help that delivered it consistent with greater present day technologies.

There aren't a lot of ibm mainframes around anymore, but the sites that have them have trouble getting people who know how to work with those apps. And a lot of the installations are buying applications instead of growing their own.
You need to do a job search online and find an area with mainframes.
