I have added a photo from a program like photoshop and I want to place text ontop of it.
When I add text onto it from the picture toolbar, it seems to go smoothly, but when I publish the site, I get a red X.
Any ideas what is causing this?

To add text to an image in FrontPage click the image you want to add text to and select the big A on the image toolbar. This will show a box for you to type in the message ( it's called a hotspot. you can make it a link too.) You can also change the font style and color and size. Now, make sure you save the page. When you do, FrontPage will save the image as a GIF image with the text in it. When you see the save window come up, make sure the images is being saved in the same folder you save the rest of your images. You must save the image to the folder containing your images in the directory. Simply assigning a URL path for the image will not do. When you publish the site, FrontPage will ask you if you want to overwrite the original image on the remote server. Make sure to select yes. If you are still having problems, try saving the image under a different name than when you first made it. For example, if you made the image in Photoshop and named it "myimage". Once you have added the text, try naming it to "myimage2", or something like this. Keep in mind that whatever changes you make to an image must be done in FrontPage or the changes will not show up. If you have an image with the text already in it, then this will work, but if you are trying to edit an image in your website without the tools in FrontPage, the image will not show up and you will see the red X you described. The red X means that the file path to the image is incorrect and the browser cannot find the image.

Frontpage uses a webbot to overlay the text onto the picture. You would probably need to publish via http instead of ftp for the effect to work. If you try that again, take a look at the code view to see what happens when you add text from the Picture Toolbar. You'll see something like:

You should use your photo editor, like Photoshop, to place text on your images. Not only will be in the exact place and font you want, the text will be clearer on top of the picture.

The best thing to do is add the text with Photoshop instead of frontpage.

use a program such as Photoshop or Paint and add it in... that way you can customize it however you want. Note that when you save files as JPEG in Paint, however, the quality will be pretty bad..
